Ed Sheeran released a track with Yelawolf this week. It’s sharp, fast and features Sheeran rapping in a more conventional sense than usual. This year, he is releasing an EP with Yelawolf, as well as collaborating with Example.
Most Sheeran songs can be put into two groups: those where he has worked with rappers, generally grime artists, such as those on his No.5 Collaborations Project album; and those where Sheeran is a more traditional soppy singer-songwriter, such as his Songs I Wrote With Amy album and most of the songs on +. The first category endears him to the 1Xtra demographic, and second to the mainstream pop and Radio 2 demographic. Essentially, it looks like Sheeran will be sticking to the more rappy songs in the next few monthes, which are more interesting and innovative. A good musical choice, but maybe not a good commercial one.
