Santorum’s appeal to Democrats

One of the funnies things in the last week in the long-running soap opera of the Republican nomination contest  was the news about Rick Santorum calling on Democrats to vote in Michigan. A spokeswoman claimed he was trying to appeal to ‘Reagan Democrats’. This may or may not have been the aim, but it is still a suspect move when Rick Santorum is a much more unappetising choice than Mitt Romney to be president among non-Republicans. It leaves the impression (to me) that Santorum’s team knows this and therefore is asking Democrats to support him and thus shoot the GOP in the foot.

Of course Romney did win. However, Democrats can feel satisfied that they made the win smaller (stats are here) is unlikely to have helped Mitt at all.
